Business owners often ask me to take over a website that was built by another web designer. Let me tell you why I won’t, and why a fresh start is usually the best option.
I’m often asked if I can fix or clean or take over a website that was built by another web designer.
There are times when a business owner inherits a website they’re unhappy with and just want it to work better.
They want it cheap. I get it.
However, I’ve learned over the years that taking over another designer’s website usually creates more problems for me than it solves for the business owner.
Every web designer builds websites differently. And taking over the work of another web designer isn’t cool.
Plus, I know I’m going to spend way too much time being frustrated.
Since I get this request a lot, I want to explain why I choose not to take over websites built by another web designer (especially if I know them).
Hopefully, you’ll see why starting fresh is the smarter move.
Every Web Designer Builds Differently
Websites are never built the same way behind the scenes.
- Different themes, builders, plugins, and shortcuts
- Custom code that’s undocumented or outdated
- Quick fixes layered on top of quick fixes
Even if the site looks okay, the structure underneath may be fragile. Taking over someone else’s system means spending a lot of time undoing their decisions before making improvements.
This just isn’t efficient for me and it’s not cost-effective for you.
Older Websites Aren’t Built for Today’s Web
Small business owners think it’s cheaper for me to build on a website that was built years ago.
Sure, some photos and text might have been updated, but it’s the software and framework that are outdated.
These older sites struggle with:
- Being responsive in design and mobile-friendly
- Slow page speed (no one has time for that)
- Today’s SEO and Schema requirements
- Issues with accessibility standards and compliance
- Security updates are no longer compatible with software versions
- Core web vitals that affect Google rankings
If a website has this many critical issues, trying to fix things would be like remodeling a house on top of a cracked foundation.
A temporary fix is possible, but will it be worth it the long run?
Fixing a Bad Website Costs More Than Building New
Believe me, a new website is the better long-term investment. A new website is built for how people browse and search today, not how they did years ago.
If a site is poorly built, I would have to troubleshoot unknown issues, clean up messy code, replace outdated plugins or try to find new.
Taking on a website built by another web designer means there will always be frustrations in working around design limitations.
That’s not fun for me.
Also, my time to do all these tasks adds up quickly, and it’s all billable. You end up paying for a cleanup instead of progress.
Your new website allows every dollar to go toward building something solid, not patching problems. I would be creating something clean and mobile-friendly.
I’m a Web Designer Who Stands Behind What I Build
I am proud of my work, and I am confident in every website that carries my name.
I’ve been building websites for more than two decades and I continue to grow with the process.
When I’m the one who builds your website:
- I know exactly how it’s developed and designed
- I can support you and your website long-term
- I can teach you how to update it confidently
- I can optimize it properly for SEO and performance
I would never have this same level of confidence if I take on someone else’s work, especially if the site was created poorly to begin with.
Benefits of Starting Fresh with a New Website
Instead of repairing an outdated site, I recommend building a modern, future-ready website designed for how people browse and search now.
Built Mobile-First
People visit your website on their phone wherever it’s convenient. They search by phone at night, on the couch, or between errands.
Your new website will be designed for that reality.
Faster Load Times
Speed matters for users and for Google.
A new site is optimized from the start. It won’t be weighed down by years of clutter.
SEO-Ready (Not SEO-Afterthought)
Each website is structured properly from day one:
- Clean page titles and headings
- Local SEO foundations
- Search-friendly content layout
Easier for You to Update
No confusing systems. No fear of breaking something.
I build sites that business owners can comfortably manage and update.
Clean, Modern Web Design
Refreshed looks build trust. Your website has to reflect who you are today, not who you were years ago.
Remember, people judge your business in seconds. You don’t have much time to inspire them to stick around, much less hire you..
A Website Built to Grow With You
Whether you add pages, blog posts, products, or new services, your website is ready to grow. You won’t need another rebuild in a year or two.
Marcie Wolf – A Web Designer You Can Trust
Bottom line, I won’t take over poorly built websites. I won’t take over the work of another web designer.
What I will do is create a new website that’s built for how people browse and search today, not how they did years ago.
As your web designer, my website plan:
- Saves time and money in the long run
- Performs better in search results
- Gives you confidence instead of stress
- Reflects your business as it is today
A new website build gives you a clean foundation for better SEO, a modern design that builds trust, and a website that’s easy to update and grow as your business evolves.
Instead of patching problems, you’re investing in a site that’s ready for today’s internet.
Is your business ready to invest in your online presence? It makes sense to invest in something that’s built right, built clean, and built to last.
