Make Social Media Fun Again. I feel like this is the most effective bit of social media guidance I can give a small business. Because fun means being more human.
Most small business owners share posts on social media that are safe.
They don’t want to stray from that safe place because they’re afraid of looking unprofessional.
However, on social media, authentic is the new professional.
I always tell small business owners to stop overthinking and start showing up as themselves.
The Truth: Fun = Human
When we’re scrolling through social media feeds, we don’t connect with logos and boring text graphics.
The things that make us stop scrolling are posts with personality, interesting stories, great photos, and life behind the scenes.
Don’t think of your fun post as being silly or off brand.
Think of it as approachable, relatable, and memorable.
Passion-Driven Social Media for the Win
I encourage small businesses to have more fun on social media.
In fact, being fun might be your only real competitive advantage against big, faceless corporations.
- Write about things you love rather than focusing on trending, forced, or purely professional topics.
- Focus on authentic engagement and pursuing your passions.
And ease up on the pressure of insights. Stop worrying so much about metrics and focus more on authentic and creative posts.
Spontaneous posting is good, too. Things happen during the day that we want to be included on.
I tell business owners that fun can be a professional strategy. It can be the highest-performing content there is for a business.
Plus, it’s an alternative to those boring all-text sales graphics that nobody really cares about.
Fun Humanizes Your Brand
When a post feels real, playful, or unexpected, people stop scrolling.
People follow people, not logos. When you show the personality behind your business, it builds trust.
- A web designer could state, “I have 25 years of website design experience.” – or –
- A web designer could post, “I just launched a website for my new favorite client weeks before schedule!”
Both posts show expertise, but option #2 might make the customer actually like the web designer and want to hire them.
Fun “Hacks” the Social Media Algorithm
The currency of social media is engagement, and you get paid in the form of likes, shares, and comments..
- If your post is a graphic with text only, people might give it a glance. In truth, they just continue scrolling without engaging.
- If a post has a photo and caption that makes everyone laugh or smile, they hit “Like” or they leave a comment. Better yet, they tag a friend or share it on their feed.
Option #2 with engagement tells the algorithm your content is valuable.
This signal will push your post to even more potential customers.
The “So What?” Social Media Test
You decide to share a post that’s strictly telling a joke or is a meme you found funny.
Does anything about this post remind people what you do and what your area of expertise is?
You can be as wild as you want, just as long as your caption makes it clear what you do.
Make Social Media Fun Again
I’m not telling you to abandon professionalism.
As a small business owner, you might be terrified of looking unprofessional on social media.
But remember, on social media, authentic is the new professional.
I encourage you to show the human side of your business. This is the part customers already love in person.
