The new Facebook link rule that limits us to sharing two external links a month is real. If your business page has it, you’re finding that the link rule is frustrating.
Not to worry. I have a few ideas for adding links on Facebook the right way.
The New Facebook Rule
So, lucky me. The new Facebook rule appeared on my business page in September.
Your page might not be affected… for now.
Since the limit is two external links a month, Facebook will alert you when you try to add an external link to a post.
Your editor area will show you how many links you have available, if any.
If you pay for Meta One or monetize a post, you can add an external link.
Yep, pay to play.
What DOES Count in Facebook Link Rule
- External links in feed posts
- External links in comments
But here’s the good news: I’ve come up with free, algorithm friendly workarounds that still let you drive traffic without paying for Meta One or for Facebook ads.
The best workaround is to shift your links into Facebook-native page elements like Stories, Links in Profile, Events, and Featured posts.
And, when done correctly, these do not count toward your Facebook link rule limit.
Best Free Facebook Link Rule Workaround
First, these options are allowed under the new Facebook “two external links only” rules.
Second, using any of these native page elements for linking is free.
Option 1: Stories With Link Stickers
⇒ When to Use: Blog posts, booking links, new products, tourism updates.
This is my favorite option for sharing blog posts. Stories are exempt from the link limit.
Plus, Stories also appear on your own Facebook page feed for 24 hours so it’s a quick post option.
- Create a background image that’s tall.
- Click on stickers and choose the Link sticker.
- Add a blog post link and choose the blog card with graphic option.
- Sharing Stories more often than feed posts keeps traffic flowing.
Option 2: Links in Profile and Tag Your Page
⇒ Best Links: Home page, service pages, dining menus, product links, blog posts.
First, update your Facebook profile by adding more links to the Links section.
I’ve been using this option to send people to my Home page and Contact page.
- At the bottom of your post caption, add Link in Profile
- Then, tag your own Facebook page; people can click to your profile.
- There is no external link used with this tagging method.
Option 3: Facebook Events
⇒ Suitable For: Workshops, sales, launches, seasonal promos, tourism events, etc.
- Add your website link in the Ticket/Registration URL field.
- Share the Facebook Event to your feed (no external link used).
- Users click “Register” or “Find Tickets” → takes visitors to your website.
Option 4: Featured Facebook Pinned Post
⇒ Top Posts: Keep an important evergreen link at the top of your feed.
- You can pin one post with an external link to the top of your page.
- This will use one of your monthly link credits.
- A featured, pinned post stays visible all month.
- Repeat this pinned post option each month with something new.
BONUS Tip: Add Your Business Location
⇒ Always Use: When posting as your business, add your business location to each post (instead of a town).
- People reading your post can click on the location at the top of your post.
- Clicking will take them to your Facebook business page.
- They will see your Links under the About tab or use profile info to contact you.
What Does NOT Count in Facebook Link Rule
Remember, there are ways around the Facebook link rule that are free and acceptable to use.
- Links in Stories
- Page profile Links (under About)
- Ticket and Registration links in Events
- Links to other Facebook pages (considered internal links)
- Links to Instagram and WhatsApp
Changing your Facebook posting strategy will keep your reach high while avoiding potential penalties.
Plus, these options are free!
