I’m sure you’ve noticed by now that Google AI search results show up first. How are Google AI search results generated, and what does this mean for getting your business found on Google?
When you search on Google today, an AI-generated answer box appears before a list of links.
I asked Google “Who is the most affordable web designer in northern michigan?” and shared my results in my blog graphic (shown above).
These are called AI Overviews (previously known as Search Generative Experience), and they’re changing the way people find information online.
So, why is Google putting AI answers first?
And more importantly, what does this mean for your business website?
How Google AI Search Results Are Generated
Google’s AI does not replace the search results you’re used to seeing. Google’s AI enhances them.
Here’s how it works:
Using Trusted Sources
- The AI scans Google’s massive search index (the same one used for traditional results).
Information Summaries
- Google AI uses generative AI models to combine details from multiple sources, then it provides you with a concise overview.
Helpful Website Links
- There are times when you will see a website links. AI Overviews will link to websites so you can learn more from the actual sources.
AI Overviews are a summary of what’s already online, not brand-new information.
Are Google AI Search Results Always Accurate?
Not necessarily.
While AI Overviews are designed to be helpful, they’re not perfect. AI can sometimes misinterpret facts or leave out important details.
For fast-changing topics like breaking news, results might lag behind.
More complex subjects like health, finance, or legal advice might be missing what you’d find by reading expert sources directly.
Notice that Google places the following disclaimer above AI Overviews:
Generative AI is experimental. Check the sources.
Google AI Search Results and Your Business
If your content shows up in an AI Overview, this can increase visibility for your business. Links will bring more traffic to your website which could mean more potential customers.
People might not click through, but just showing up in an AI Overview can increase visibility for your brand.
Authority Matters More Than Ever
Websites that demonstrate expertise and trustworthiness (Google’s E-E-A-T framework) are more likely to be included.
Clear, Structured Content Wins
Content that is written in a conversational style like FAQs and how-to guides are more AI-friendly. This type of content is most likely to be pulled into AI Overview summaries.
Focus on Being the Source
If your website is cited in an AI Overview, you are positioned as a trusted authority. People don’t have to click a link to see your information and consider you an expert on that topic.
Prepare Your Website for Google AI Search
Make sure your website has a great Frequently Asked Question page.
- Providing content that directly answers customer questions is extremely powerful.
- The real questions people ask when they call or email you make for a great FAQ page.
Use structured data, or Schema, so Google understands your pages better.
- Choose the right Schema types that are relevant to your content.
- Use Article for blog posts, Product for e-commerce items, or JobPosting for hiring announcements.
Keep your content accurate, up-to-date, and easy to read.
- Make sure your text has good contrast for readability like black text on a white background.
- Update your text often to keep your site fresh.
- Test the user experience on various mobile devices often.
A great way to build trust is by highlighting your expertise, sharing updated credentials, and providing client testimonials.
Final Thought on Google AI Search Results
Google’s AI search results are here to stay, and they’re reshaping search as we know it.
While AI search results are not always 100% accurate, they do represent a new opportunity:
- If your website is cited in AI Overviews, your business will get instant visibility and credibility.
To show up in both AI results and traditional search, focus on creating high-quality, helpful content that answers the real questions your customers are asking.
Fresh content and great FAQs will help you stay ahead of your competition.
