Keep it Real in Social Media
The “social” part of the term social media refers to people interacting and sharing information on social channels. And social media works best when you’re more human in your communications.
With social media, your business can interact with potential customers and current clients. Social media is a two-way street that gives you the ability to communicate back and forth. You can show people who you really are by keeping it real. We love to share photos of us with our muddy Jeep (this time on Drummond Island). It may not have anything to do with our business, but it is who we are!
Humanize your message
When people scroll through all of the posts in their feed, you need to get their attention. You probably won’t get through to them with in-your-face selling. You need to engage with people in a fun, unique way.
The brands who keep it real on social media are finding success by touching on the emotions of their followers. They are creating relationships with their followers. It’s pretty rare to find us not goofing around so the majority of our photos are silly and make us laugh. (We hope you are laughing, too…)
One of the best ways to get engagement is by adding humor to your marketing. Find a balance of fun by showing your human side. Take candid pictures around the office to share. Create short videos of staff volunteering or socializing. The goal is to show people the real you.
Social media is about engaging with your audience in the most real way possible. People want to do business with other people, not boring faceless corporations whose message is only about selling.
Build trust and make friends
If you show your human side, people begin to trust you because they know you. You are not hiding behind an unknown corporate facade. Let your followers know how important they are to you. Let them know their feedback is welcome and helps you improve and grow.
One of our favorite places to hang out is Ernesto’s Cigar Bar in Petoskey, Michigan. We’ve met some cool people there and enjoy a sweet smoke with a nice Bulleit Bourbon Manhattan. Why not post selfies and tag our favorite place on social media? It’s who we are!
When you put your personality out there and start earning people’s trust, you will have happier clients. You may also get a few potential referrals. We are happy to say that the majority of our clients have gone on to become our friends and have brought us plenty of work through referrals!
Keep it real in how you speak
Social media is no place for corporate jargon or business lingo. You will bore people to death.
The way you talk with your audience on social media should be the same way you chat with your circle of friends. If your social media self and your true self is the same, you will be more socially connected.
Your customer retention depends on how you connect with people. When you keep it real with your social media, you can convert simple followers to customers and loyal friends.
So, just lighten up and humanize your marketing. If you’re in management in a corporate environment, you can still have fun and show the real you!
